Why is 80mm the standard residential width?
80mm hits the balance most home retaining walls need: enough thickness for walls to about 1.8m on 100 Standard series posts, while staying light enough that a pallet holds ten sleepers and site handling stays manageable. That popularity is why the widest choice of colours and surface patterns in our range lands at this thickness, so if a particular look matters to your project, 80mm is usually where you will find it. Filter the range by colour or pattern to narrow it down.
How strong are 80mm sleepers?
Every 80mm sleeper is steel reinforced with N10 or N12 bar and manufactured to AS3600, in 40, 50 or 60MPa concrete strengths depending on the line. Certified ranges carry an engineer certified 50 year lifespan, and a 20 year warranty applies on specific sizes. For retained heights beyond about 1.8m, move to the 100mm range on 150 Heavy Duty posts rather than pushing 80mm past its pairing.
Can two people handle 80mm sleepers?
Yes, 80mm is the practical ceiling for two person lifts. Above this width, sleeper weights climb quickly and machine handling becomes the sensible plan. That makes 80mm the heaviest thickness we would suggest for a hand built DIY wall.
