What is a Retaining Wall?
A retaining wall is a structure built to support and hold back soil or rock from an area or structure. These walls can be used to create usable outdoor space, stabilize slopes, and prevent erosion. They are often constructed when there is a desired change in ground elevation that exceeds the natural angle of repose of the soil.
Cantilever retaining walls are a common type of retaining wall that are freestanding structures without lateral support at their tops. They are supported by a footing and rise above the grade on one side to retain a higher level grade on the other side. These walls must be able to withstand lateral pressures from loose soils or water.
Proper design and installation of retaining walls is crucial in order to properly support the retained material and prevent it from moving downhill due to gravity. This creates lateral earth pressure on the wall, which depends on the angle of internal friction and the cohesive strength of the retained material, as well as the movement of the retaining structure.

Retaining Wall Construction
When it comes to retaining wall work around the home, sometimes it can be difficult to know when you can do it yourself and when you need to call in a professional concrete retaining wall installer. A retaining wall’s footing, block width, elevation and whether it requires a geogrid or other reinforcement will determine the type of retaining wall construction best suited for your project.

Sleepers are engineered for the use with retaining walls which satisfy the following conditions/limitations:
- Back wall is free from drainage consisting of sand and or gravel.
- All sub surface water is drained by means of an argicultuaral drain or other suitable method.
- Sleepers are handled with care during transportation and erection on site.
- No machine compaction of back fill is allowed within a distance of 75% of the wall height.
- Walls over 1 metre require council permission and engineers advice.
