Every concrete sleeper we sell starts as a certified mix design and ends as a steel-reinforced structural panel rated for decades in the ground. This page explains how the sleepers are made, what gets tested along the way, and which documents back every claim.
The mix: 40, 50 and 60MPa
Concrete strength is measured in megapascals of compressive strength. Our range spans three grades: 40MPa for general residential walls, 50MPa for the premium residential tier, and 60MPa for maximum-strength engineered work. The grade is set by the mix design, cement content and curing, not by the sleeper’s face or colour, so a woodgrain sleeper and a smooth sleeper of the same grade carry the same rating.
Steel reinforcement in every sleeper
Each sleeper is cast around N10 or N12 deformed reinforcing bar. The steel carries the tensile load a retaining wall puts on a sleeper as soil pushes against one face. Reinforcement placement is part of the certified design: two bars in standard sleepers, positioned for the sleeper’s span and thickness, to AS3600 concrete structures requirements.
Casting and finishing
Sleepers are cast face-down in steel moulds. The mould gives the sleeper its pattern: smooth panels come from flat moulds, and woodgrain, stackstone and rockface textures come from patterned mould liners. Colour is in the concrete or the moulded face itself, not painted on, which is why the finish does not peel or need recoating. Sleepers cure to strength before they are stacked, stored and dispatched.
Testing: verified twice a week
Concrete batches on our certified SA-made ranges are independently tested twice per week. Test cylinders from production batches are crushed to confirm the concrete meets its rated MPa before sleepers from that batch are sold. That continuous verification is what an engineer relies on when a certified design specifies a 50MPa or 60MPa sleeper.
Certification you can hand to your engineer
Certified ranges carry a structural-engineer-certified 50-year lifespan, and the documents are public: engineering certificates for the 40, 50 and 60MPa grades, a structural design certificate and a load capacity certificate are all on our resources page. Steel posts in the matching system are hot-dip galvanised to AS/NZS 4680 and ACRS compliant, with design references to AS1170 loading, AS4100 steel and AS4678 earth-retaining structures.
What this means for your wall
A retaining wall is only as good as its weakest component.
