Concrete Sleepers for Retaining Walls

Concrete sleeper retaining walls hold back soil with steel-reinforced concrete sleepers slotted between galvanised steel posts. The system does not rot, warp or burn, carries engineer certification on rated ranges, and suits everything from garden terraces to engineered walls up to 4.5 metres.

This page shows every sleeper we stock nationally. Use the stock location filter to see your state’s range, or jump to concrete sleepers Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra or the Melbourne range.

How a concrete sleeper retaining wall works

Galvanised steel posts are concreted into footings at set centres, and concrete sleepers slot horizontally between the post flanges to form the wall face. Each sleeper is steel reinforced with N10 or N12 bar and manufactured to AS3600 in 40, 50 or 60MPa strengths. The posts carry the soil load, the sleepers span between them, and drainage behind the wall keeps water pressure off the structure. Certified ranges carry an engineer-certified 50-year lifespan, and specific sizes include a 20-year warranty.

Choosing a finish

Every sleeper above comes in the same structural system, so finish is a style decision, not a strength one. Browse by smooth, woodgrain, stackstone or rockface pattern, by charcoal, grey, black or sandstone colour, or by length and width.

How much does a concrete sleeper retaining wall cost?

Sleepers run from about $29 for a 1.8m standard grey up to $110 for premium 60MPa sizes, with posts priced by series and length. Material cost for a typical garden wall lands well under timber once lifespan is counted. The calculator gives an itemised price for your wall dimensions in minutes.

Are concrete sleepers better than timber for retaining walls?

Concrete sleepers do not rot, warp or attract termites, and certified ranges are rated for 50 years. Timber walls typically need replacing within 10 to 20 years in ground contact. Concrete costs more per sleeper but usually less per year of wall life.

Do I need council approval for a sleeper retaining wall?

Rules vary by council and state, but walls over about 1 metre, or walls supporting a driveway or structure, generally need an engineer-certified design and approval. Our engineering guide explains what certifiers look for.
